A Beginner's Guide to Your First Planted Tank
AQUAPETS · 15 June 2026
Starting a planted tank is the most rewarding way into the hobby — but a little planning saves a lot of algae later.
Pick the right plants
Begin with forgiving species like Java Fern, Anubias and Cryptocoryne Wendtii. They tolerate low light and don't need injected CO₂, so you can learn the rhythm of the tank before chasing harder carpets.
Light and the nitrogen cycle
Run your lights 6–8 hours a day to start. More light without matching nutrients and CO₂ just feeds algae. Cycle the tank for a few weeks before adding fish so beneficial bacteria can establish.
Easy does it
Weekly water changes of around 25%, gentle flow and patience beat any expensive gadget. Let the tank mature and it will reward you.
